These are confusing and stressful times. The disruptions to daily life are being felt by all of us. Uncertainty, loss of regular routine, economic loss and worry can be challenging for anyone but even more so if you suffer from anxiety disorders, OCD, panic attacks, depression, etc. When we get trapped in a fear response our immune systems shut down in favor of survival mechanisms, which actually further heighten our anxiety! For those of us with such issues, it is more important than ever to be sure to continue your current regimens to take care of your mental, emotional and physical health.
What are some ways to help relieve stress?
- Eat Properly. A good diet with little to no processed foods and processed sugars and lots of good water will help your body handle stress better. Don’t skip meals (being hungry spikes the stress hormone cortisol and unbalances your sugar levels which will leave you shaky). To support the nervous system I would add fermented foods for natural B vitamins and healthy fats to your meals: avocados, real butter (preferably grass-fed and organic), ghee, coconut oil, hemp and fish oil (always with a protein), pecans, chia seeds, walnuts and macadamia nuts are good options. Cut out or at least cut down on junk food, coffee, tea and soda (caffeine triggers your adrenal glands to release the stress-hormone cortisol and robs your body of B vitamins which are needed by your nervous system).
- Get plenty of rest. Go to bed early and keep a regular bedtime.
- Take time to unwind and regroup. Use this time for a personal at-home retreat where you can enjoy some time spent away from work, extra-curricular activities and the hustle and bustle of life. Watch funny movies or videos, listen to music; dance.
- Light to moderate exercise helps release endorphins and drain out excess adrenaline.
- Turn OFF the news. Stay Calm but cautious and avoid getting caught up in the constant onslaught of stress-inducing stories.
- Prayer and meditation. Whatever these mean to you, take time every day to practice.
- Punching. If you are in the midst of a panic attack, this is the BEST way to release adrenaline. Of course, punching people is frowned upon so I suggest getting a bunch of old pillows together and go to work. It may sound counterintuitive but take it from someone who used to have multiple panic attacks daily—it really works!
Of course, some stress issues require more concentrated effort. Physiologically, anxiety disorders such as GAD, depression, OCD, panic attacks, etc. may need Adrenal and Nervous System support. When there is a structural shift of the head, there is a great amount of stress on the nerves that exit the spine and can cause pain or physical discomfort which can add to emotional stress and may require a structural adjustment. Mental or emotional stress can be aided by working with someone to develop techniques to cope.
