Hand Microbiome and Hand Washing

Many people are familiar with the Gut Microbiome, but not many are aware that the Gut Microbiome is one of many microbiomes in our body.

There is the mouth microbiome (think bad breath and gingivitis), the eye microbiome (think pink eye or eye infections), the vaginal microbiome (think yeast infections or foul smells), and, among others, the one we need to discuss today…….

The SKIN microbiome!

Here is the extremely shortened version of it: If you use hand sanitizer, you are ruining your hand’s skin microbiome as a whole. It’s like setting off a bomb and killing everything including the good and bad bacteria and viruses.

Washing your hands with soap and water rids your hands just as well from the bad bacteria and viruses, but then also doesn’t kill all the good guys on your hand microbiome.

When given the chance, use soap and water to clean your hands instead of hand sanitizer, and you will be much more robust and resistant to COVID-19.

All because you kept a healthy hand microbiome.
